Leporello
Intervener: Rita Alaoui
Date: 7 to 9 November 2018
Location: Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, Marrakech
For its fifth edition, MACAAL Lab is pleased to invite the Moroccan artist Rita Alaoui to lead a workshop about creating a book of a particular genre, the Leporello.
The Leporello is a book that unfolds into an accordion by using a technique of folding and gluing pages together. A land of free expression, its content has no restriction.
The Moroccan artist Rita Alaoui has often used the book in her artistic approach, as a receptacle for her drawings, photographs, paintings and thoughts. For three days, from collecting inspirations within Al Maaden to the final presentation of the works produced, Rita Alaoui will accompany a group of amateur and professional artists at each stage of the creation of their own artist’s book.
Programme
Day 1: Discovering the Al Maaden site
Walk through the Al Maaden Golf Resort site to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature and collect the inspirations and materials that will be used to design your book (plants, minerals, photographs).
Day 2: Building the base
Make the inside of the Leporello as well as the cover by using one of the two techniques proposed (single or double cover).
Day 3: Create a content
Compose your book according to your inspirations! All the participants’ discoverings will be integrated and superimposed throughout the pages of the book they previously created. Drawings and writings will put together these compositions.
Once all the Leporelli have been finalized, all the attendees to the workshop will be invited to present their own one to the rest of the group and discuss their respective approach.
