Welcome Home Vol. II

Welcome Home Vol. II is an exhibition devoted to the Museum’s permanent collection. Following the success of MACAAL’s Welcome Home (12 September 2019 to 5 January 2020), this second phase brings together some of the most iconic works from the Museum’s collection, which have contributed to the success of earlier shows, and a selection of the Museum’s most recent acquisitions, purchased in 2020 in an effort to support artists, galleries and national as well as international institutions.
MACAAL’s collection is rich with over 2,000 works, representative of all forms of contemporary artistic expression from the continent and its diaspora, with a particular interest in new mediums. By establishing dialogue between different traditions and perspectives, this exhibition illustrates MACAAL’s ambition to offer the public a new way of seeing contemporary creation from the African continent.
A photographic portrait by Ayana V. Jackson (USA) hangs alongside the spiny sculptures of John Goba (Sierra Leone), responding to the surrealistic paintings of Mosengo Shula (DRC), beneath a monumental wall hanging by Emo de Medeiros (France – Benin). Designed to pay tribute to Fondation Alliances’ efforts to support emerging artists, this new exhibit also includes a space dedicated entirely to the winners and special mention recipients from the Lcc Program.
Underscoring the Museum’s role as a truly interactive platform, the collective exhibition Welcome Home Vol. II is an invitation to participate in an unexpectedly aesthetic and captivating experience.
